Harvest almost over !

Its been an interesting harvest weather wise but for us very good on yields.  Overall we have been very pleased with it being quite noticeable that as soil health has improved the crops seem to be more resilient to the usual extremes of weather.  I was very worried about some of the second wheats (or wheat following a previous wheat crop) as we had a very dry spring which put the crop under a great deal of pressure but my fears were mainly unfounded as they did exceptional well.  We had the odd minor disaster, we always do in farming, but for us we try and push the boundaries of what we do every year and try something new; I will not be direct drilling combining peas again as we have fifty acres of basically nothing after that experiment.  The important thing is know why you have failed so at least you don’t do it again !  Winter beans have done very well for us as the season was perfect for them; drought in the spring stressed them into flowering early then summer rainfall filled the pods, in places their yield has been exceptionally good.

The real star of the year has been the haulage boys as we would have been bursting at the seems if we hadn’t had the ability to shift produce off farm in a wet year.

Harvest 2017 has kicked off;

Only seems like yesterday when the last one finished.  Old age I guess !

Anyhow so far so good; winter barley has done well going from 6.5tn/ha up to over 9tn/ha in large areas which is very pleasing after last year’s awful barley yields.

Prices have kept up as have deliveries and so far we have shipped out some 800tn on our own transport; this mainly to the docks at Ipswich but also to Camgrain.

Actually found myself waiting for the barley boat at Ipswich with a load so tried my hand at the longest and slowest video action shot ever……enjoy.

Update on drilling into 2nd Wheat into standing mustard last autumn

Bit of an update on last years direct drilled 2nd wheats which we tried into a standing mustard cover crop.  It was quite adventurous so was done on a limited area.

2014-09-21 11.27.10

This is what we drilled into above and a clip taken from Daryn’s mobile phone below.  It took a bit of confidence to push on with it as it was hard to see exactly what was going on but the seed went into very good conditions, plenty of moisture and tilth so we were reasonably confident it would come out okay.

It was a very bad grass block hence our plan not to give the blackgrass any chance to get established.  We had given the mustard 3lt of Roundup the day before drilling.  Some problems with blocking especially on the headlands but we persevered.

This is a few days after emergence, not the best looking crop in Essex I have to admit but a crop never the less.  Mustard is down on the ground between the rows and covering the soil which was quiet notable in that we had quite a lot of rainfall and then drying out and the soil remained open and uncapped.

Same crop at early ear emergence with the picture taken in the same location.  Reasonably happy with it but hasn’t tillered very well which may be the variety or the method, I’m not sure.  Best thing is that the blackgrass was controlled quiet well with just a pre-emergence spray.  Will be interesting to see how it yields for first year no-till ground.

After some extensive mods from Suffolk Agri and Amazone finally getting a much better result on the drill in that the coulters are penitrating now.  This is on first year no-tilled ground which is always tricky and into an overwintered mustard cover crop.  Not sure if the mustard was ideal for this as the ground took a long time to dry out after the cover crop was sprayed off in Febuary and there seems to be not much natural tilth in the top……just hard actually but its a reasonable job and hopefully will be okay.  We have some better ideas for next years cover crops in this situation.

Haulage during harvest

During the busy harvest period grain is bulk loaded off the fields using a 30 tonne capacity grain chaser either to the tractor and trailer and taken back to store or to the 44 tonne lorry for delivery.
